چکیده

Many studies suggest that the sustained activation underlying working memory maintenance is mediated by a distributed network that includes prefrontal cortex and other structures (e.g., posterior parietal cortex, thalamus, globus pallidus, and the caudate nucleus). A computational model of working memory, called FROST (short for FROntal-Striatal-Thalamic), is proposed in which the representation of items and spatial positions is encoded in lateral prefrontal cortex. During delay intervals, activation in these prefrontal cells is sustained via parallel, prefrontal cortical-thalamic loops. Activation reverberates in these loops because prefrontal cortical excitation of the head of the caudate nucleus leads to disinhibition of the thalamus (via the globus pallidus). FROST successfully accounts for a wide variety of working memory data, including single-cell recording data and human behavioral data.

From sensorimotor learning to memory cells in prefrontal and temporal association cortex: A neurocomputational study of disembodiment

Memory cells, the ultimate neurobiological substrates of working memory, remain active for several seconds and are most commonly found in prefrontal cortex and higher multisensory areas. However, if correlated activity in "embodied" sensorimotor systems underlies the formation of memory traces, why should memory cells emerge in areas distant from their antecedent activations in sensorimotor are...

Modeling Working Memory and Decision Making Using Generic Neural Microcircuits

Classical behavioral experiments to study working memory typically involve three phases. First the subject receives a stimulus, then holds it in the working memory, and finally makes a decision by comparing it with another stimulus. A neurocomputational model using generic neural microcircuits with feedback is presented here that integrates the three computational stages into a single unified f...

significance of working memory in the academic achievement

The effectiveness and significance of working memory in the academic achievement and efficacy of students is indisputable. In memory studies, the working Memory Model (Baddeley, 2000) is a multivariate one with an emphasis on short and long term memory with a computational view. This recent view has made memory a more significant in academic performance, because it has an unbreakable link with ...
